Wall Street Journal Flags A Dark Downside To Trump’s Greenland Push
The Wall Street Journal cautioned on Sunday about the potential repercussions of President Donald Trump’s interest in acquiring Greenland, warning that such a move could end up benefiting Russia and China, the very adversaries Trump has often cited as a reason for considering taking control of the semi-autonomous Danish territory.
The newspaper’s conservative editorial board, known for its criticism of Trump’s trade policies, noted the strategic importance of Greenland and its untapped reserves of rare-earth minerals as reasons for Washington to pay attention to the region.
However, the editorial board argued against using aggressive tactics, such as imposing tariffs on European allies who have stationed troops in Greenland, to achieve this goal.
It warned that Trump’s pursuit of Greenland could play into Russia’s desire to weaken the NATO alliance and ultimately benefit China and Russia, as traditional U.S. allies like Canada and the UK turn to Beijing for closer partnerships and trade agreements.
