Walmart to expand drone delivery to hundreds of stores
Walmart is set to revolutionize the way customers receive their orders with an ambitious plan to expand its drone delivery service in the next two years. Through a partnership with Alphabet-owned drone operator Wing, the retail giant will offer drone deliveries for groceries and other store items from an additional 150 stores in 2026, marking it as the “world’s largest drone delivery expansion.”
Currently offering drone deliveries from select locations in Texas and the Atlanta metro area, Walmart is aiming to extend this service to 270 locations across the U.S. by the end of 2027. This initiative comes after Walmart’s announcement last year to introduce drone deliveries in new markets, leveraging its network of over 4,600 stores in the country.
Greg Cathey, senior vice president of digital fulfillment transformation at Walmart, expressed excitement about the expansion, highlighting the convenience it will bring to customers in obtaining essential items, such as last-minute dinner ingredients. With the Federal Aviation Administration approving aerial commercial package deliveries in 2019, the landscape for home drone deliveries has been steadily evolving, with companies like DoorDash and Amazon also utilizing drones for drop-offs.
To access drone deliveries from Walmart, customers can simply download the Wing app, enter their address, and check if they fall within the delivery range. Walmart has previously stated that deliveries can be fulfilled in as fast as 30 minutes, offering a swift and efficient way to receive orders. The partnership between Walmart and Wing, established in 2023, is expected to extend drone delivery services to over 40 million Americans, with initial locations including Los Angeles, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Miami, with more to be added in the future.
As Walmart continues to innovate and enhance its delivery services, the expansion of drone deliveries signifies a shift towards faster and more convenient ways for customers to receive their orders. With technology driving the evolution of retail, Walmart’s strategic partnership with Wing is paving the way for a seamless and efficient delivery experience for millions of consumers across the country.
