War veterans go from Ukraine front lines to Wembley ringside for Usyk’s heavyweight bout

LONDON — Ukrainian War Veterans Join Oleksandr Usyk at Wembley Stadium

Andrii, a Ukrainian coal miner and war veteran, expressed his excitement about meeting Oleksandr Usyk, the undisputed world heavyweight champion, at Wembley Stadium on Saturday night. Andrii, along with more than a dozen other veterans, will be in attendance at the fight between Usyk and Daniel Dubois, a rematch of their 2023 bout.

Andrii recalled watching Usyk’s previous fight on the front line in Ukraine, celebrating quietly when he emerged victorious. Now, being able to attend the fight in person is a monumental event for him and his fellow veterans.

These veterans are employees of DTEK, Ukraine’s largest private energy company, which has partnered with Usyk to raise awareness about the country’s civilian energy infrastructure following the Russian invasion in 2022. With most of them never having traveled outside Ukraine before, their journey to London symbolizes a new chapter in their lives.

Usyk, an Olympic gold medalist and unofficial ambassador for Ukraine, has been using his platform to shed light on the struggles faced by his country during the ongoing conflict with Russia. His collaboration with DTEK and the war veterans serves as a powerful message of resilience and unity.

Throughout the week, Usyk has been actively involved in humanitarian efforts, including unveiling a mosaic in Trafalgar Square to raise funds for housing for Ukrainians affected by the war. His words resonate with hope and determination as he stands alongside his fellow countrymen in the face of adversity.

The presence of the war veterans at Wembley Stadium symbolizes the strength and courage of the Ukrainian people in the midst of turmoil. As Usyk prepares to defend his title, he carries the hopes and aspirations of his nation, serving as a beacon of inspiration for all.
