Wells Fargo Refuses To Reimburse Customer After Scammer Drains $18,000 From Account, Finding ‘No Evidence of Fraud’: Report
Wells Fargo Customer Denied Reimbursement After Falling Victim to Scam
A recent report has revealed that Wells Fargo has refused to reimburse a customer who lost $18,000 in a scam. Virginia resident William Sroufe fell victim to a phone scam on December 17th, where the caller pretended to be from Wells Fargo, as reported by local news outlet WWBT.
The scammer, using Wells Fargo’s name on the caller ID, informed Sroufe of fraudulent activity on his account and convinced him to lock it down. The caller then mentioned money being transferred to Cash App and Bitcoin, which raised Sroufe’s suspicions. Upon checking his banking app, Sroufe was shocked to discover that over $18,000 had been drained from his account.
Despite missing an email alert from Wells Fargo regarding unusual activity, Sroufe promptly contacted the bank’s fraud department, leading to the closure of his account. However, his claim for reimbursement was denied by Wells Fargo, citing a lack of evidence of fraud. Sroufe strongly disputes the bank’s decision, stating, "Authorization through deception is not consent. And that’s what I kept telling them."
As of now, Wells Fargo has not provided any comments on the case, leaving Sroufe frustrated and seeking justice for the financial loss he endured.
It is crucial for individuals to remain vigilant and cautious when receiving unexpected calls or messages from financial institutions. Scammers continue to devise sophisticated methods to deceive unsuspecting victims, emphasizing the importance of verifying the authenticity of any communication before taking any action.
