West Colfax former VFW Post 501 property lists for $5M

A Former VFW Post in Denver Hits the Market

A former Veterans of Foreign Wars post along West Colfax Avenue in Denver is now available for purchase. The Colorado VFW organization is asking $5 million for the 20,000-square-foot building at 4747 W. Colfax Ave., situated on just under an acre of land.

The property, zoned C-MS-5, allows for mixed-use buildings up to five stories high. Built in 1981, the two-story post building sits on two sides of an alley.

Post 501, established in 1920, was named after Coloradan Francis Brown Lowry, a World War I casualty who later became the namesake of the Lowry Air Force Base and neighborhood. However, the post had its charter revoked last year due to operational issues and financial mismanagement.

According to Jesse Eastburn, adjutant/quartermaster for VFW Colorado, the post had over 100 veteran members, but only five were actively involved, making it difficult to sustain operations.

The post building, which features two bars, a full kitchen, and ample parking, was primarily used as an event space. However, poor financial management led to its closure.

Real estate broker Win King of King Commercial, who is marketing the property, believes there is potential to repurpose the building for modern concepts like a beer garden. The land could also be suitable for income-restricted housing projects.

The VFW aims to sell the property to generate funds for its service offices in Denver, Colorado Springs, and Grand Junction, where staff assist veterans with benefits and VA claims.

While declining membership has impacted VFW posts nationwide, efforts to attract younger veterans through innovative events like video game nights are underway. Newer posts are opting for meeting spaces in community centers to alleviate financial burdens.
