What to know about the Milan Cortina Olympics opening ceremony on Friday

The much-anticipated opening ceremony of the Milan Cortina Olympics is set to take place on Friday night in Milan’s iconic San Siro stadium. This event will feature the Parade of Athletes and various entertainment acts, making it a spectacle that is expected to capture the attention of millions of viewers worldwide.

Scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. local time, the opening ceremony will be broadcast live on NBC and streamed on Peacock and NBC Olympics platforms. Additionally, NBC will air an enhanced encore presentation in primetime at 8 p.m. ET for those who may have missed the live broadcast.

Renowned artists like Mariah Carey and Andrea Bocelli are among the performers slated to grace the stage during the ceremony, which is expected to be attended by around 60,000 spectators at San Siro, including a delegation led by U.S. Vice President JD Vance.

In a unique twist, elements of the opening ceremony will also be conducted in three other locations across Italy, with live feeds from Cortina, Livigno, and Predazzo adding to the overall grandeur of the event. Two cauldrons, inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s geometric studies, will be lit simultaneously in Milan and Cortina, symbolizing unity and harmony.

The theme of this year’s ceremony is “Harmony,” reflecting the need for peace and dialogue in a world marred by violence. The concept of the Olympic Truce will also be highlighted, promoting a cessation of hostilities before and after the Games to foster a spirit of unity through sport.

Over 1,200 dedicated volunteers have been rehearsing diligently for months to ensure a flawless execution of the opening ceremony, which will also pay tribute to the late Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani, known for his contributions to Italian ready-to-wear fashion.

With an impressive lineup of performers and a message of unity and peace, the Milan Cortina Olympics opening ceremony promises to be a memorable and impactful event that celebrates the spirit of the Games.
