What we know about Shane Devon Tamura, the suspect of the Midtown Manhattan shooting
Police have identified the man responsible for the tragic shooting at a Midtown Manhattan office building as Shane Devon Tamura. Tamura, a 27-year-old who recently resided in Las Vegas, was equipped with body armor and a high-powered rifle when he entered the building and opened fire, resulting in the deaths of four individuals.
Tamura had previously obtained a concealed firearms permit from the Las Vegas Police Department and a work card from the Nevada Private Investigators Licensing Board. Records show that his work card had expired, and his last known address was in a gated community in Las Vegas. Las Vegas Metro Police have gathered at the neighborhood where Tamura was believed to have lived.
Despite his violent actions, Tamura had a seemingly normal upbringing. He completed high school in the Los Angeles area, where he was known as a competitive football player. A former classmate described him as a “goofball” and did not recall any signs of mental health issues. Tamura played as a running back for Grenada Hills Charter during his high school years.
New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch revealed that Tamura had a documented history of mental health issues. He recently drove from Las Vegas to New York, where officers discovered additional ammunition, a revolver, a backpack, and medication inside his vehicle.
The investigation revealed that Tamura’s vehicle traveled through several states before reaching New York City. His route included stops in Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, and Columbia, New Jersey. He entered New York City shortly after being in New Jersey.
After the shooting spree, Tamura took his own life on the 33rd floor of the office building, which housed the offices of Rudin Management, a real estate management firm. One additional person was killed on that floor. The motive behind Tamura’s actions remains unclear, and authorities are working diligently to understand why he targeted this specific location.
ABC News has reached out to Rudin Management for comment, but they have not disclosed any information regarding Tamura’s connection to the company. The investigation into this tragic event is ongoing, with law enforcement officials striving to piece together the events leading up to the deadly attack.
