White House to conduct review of Smithsonian museum exhibitions to ensure they fit with Trump’s view of American history

The White House has announced plans to conduct a thorough review of the Smithsonian Institution’s museum exhibitions, materials, and operations in preparation for America’s 250th anniversary next year. This review aims to ensure that the museums align with President Donald Trump’s perspective on American history.

In a letter addressed to Lonnie Bunch, the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, the White House emphasized the importance of reflecting the unity, progress, and enduring values that define the American story. The review is in accordance with a March executive order titled “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History,” which calls for a celebration of American exceptionalism, the removal of divisive or partisan narratives, and the restoration of confidence in cultural institutions.

The comprehensive internal review will focus on various aspects, including public-facing content such as exhibition texts, websites, and social media to assess tone, historical framing, and alignment with American ideals. Additionally, the review will evaluate the curatorial process, current and future exhibitions, the utilization of existing materials and collections, and the development of consistent curatorial guidelines that reflect the Smithsonian’s original mission.

Eight Smithsonian museums will be the initial focus of the review, including the National Museum of American History, the National Museum of Natural History, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the National Museum of the American Indian, the National Air and Space Museum, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the National Portrait Gallery, and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.

In response to the White House’s letter, the Smithsonian Institution stated that its work is grounded in a commitment to scholarly excellence, rigorous research, and the accurate presentation of history. The institution expressed its willingness to collaborate with the White House, Congress, and the Board of Regents in a constructive manner.

It is essential to ensure that the Smithsonian museums reflect the diverse perspectives and experiences that make up the American story while maintaining historical accuracy and integrity. Collaboration between the White House and the Smithsonian will be crucial in preserving the cultural heritage and significance of these institutions for future generations.
