Why Liberalism – Econlib
In my early days as a teacher, I received invaluable advice from David Henderson about being transparent regarding my economic philosophy. I proudly declare myself as a classical liberal, advocating for a free-market economy where individuals, rather than governments, are best equipped to handle complex social issues. While I acknowledge the role of government intervention when necessary, I firmly believe in prioritizing individual liberty, viewing laws as tools to enhance freedom rather than restrict it.
This advice has opened up numerous enlightening conversations with my students, especially those who may hold differing philosophical views. I often hold office hours under the shade of the beautiful live oaks on campus, engaging in stimulating discussions about economics and liberalism. These interactions have enriched both my students and myself, regardless of our differing perspectives.
One student recently posed the question of why I align with liberalism, prompting me to reflect on my evolving reasons. Beyond the empirical evidence of liberalism’s contribution to human flourishing, I have delved into the works of prominent liberal thinkers, past and present, which have deepened my understanding of the philosophy. I resonate with James Buchanan’s notion that liberalism empowers individuals to discover and actualize their true selves, fostering personal growth and societal harmony.
Liberalism, to me, is not merely a means to achieve material prosperity but a philosophy that nurtures individual autonomy and self-realization.
