Wimbledon: Taylor Fritz reaches the quarterfinals when Jordan Thompson quits with an injury

U.S. Open runner-up Taylor Fritz has advanced to the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the third time in four years. His opponent, Jordan Thompson, was forced to retire due to injuries while trailing 6-1, 3-0 after just 41 minutes of play. Thompson, who was clearly struggling with back and leg issues, took a medical timeout in the second set before ultimately deciding to stop the match.

Fritz expressed his disappointment at the way the match ended, acknowledging Thompson’s effort to compete despite not being fully fit. The American player now looks ahead to facing No. 17 seed Karen Khachanov in the quarterfinals, a stage of the tournament that neither player has reached before at Wimbledon.

Khachanov, who defeated Kamil Majchrzak in straight sets on Sunday, delivered a strong performance with a high ratio of winners to unforced errors. Majchrzak, ranked 109th, was playing in the fourth round of a major for the first time and struggled to match Khachanov’s level.

The upcoming quarterfinal matchups also include two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz facing No. 14 Andrey Rublev, and Nicolas Jarry taking on Cam Norrie. On the women’s side, top seeds Aryna Sabalenka and Amanda Anisimova are set to compete in the fourth round.

The quarterfinal lineup will be completed after Monday’s matches, featuring Novak Djokovic against Alex de Minaur and other exciting matchups on the schedule. Tennis fans can expect an action-packed week ahead as the Wimbledon tournament reaches its final stages.
