Wimbledon’s expansion plan heads to court while facing opposition from locals
The All England Club’s plan to expand Wimbledon has sparked a mix of excitement and concern among players, fans, and local residents. The proposed project includes the addition of an 8,000-seat stadium with a retractable roof and 38 new grass courts at a former golf course across the street.
While top players like Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz see the expansion as a positive development that will enhance the tournament experience, some local residents are not convinced. Save Wimbledon Park, a group dedicated to preserving green spaces and open areas, has raised concerns about the environmental impact of the project.
The proposal is set to undergo a judicial review in the U.K.’s High Court as Wimbledon’s quarterfinals take place. Opponents argue that the plan, which received approval from the Greater London Authority last year, would turn the area into an “industrial tennis complex” and violate restrictions meant to protect public open spaces.
Despite the opposition, the All England Club believes that the expansion is necessary to keep Wimbledon at the forefront of world sport. The tournament’s current setup, with qualifying rounds held at a separate location and limited practice courts, lags behind other Grand Slam events in terms of attendance and facilities.
If the plan moves forward, it will include not only new courts and a larger stadium but also public parks and community spaces. The club aims to make at least seven of the new courts available for public use and create a 23-acre park as part of the development.
While the project’s price tag remains undisclosed, reports suggest that it could cost around $270 million. If all legal challenges are overcome, construction is expected to take place over an eight-year period, ruling out the possibility of players like Djokovic competing on the new courts.
Despite the uncertainties, Djokovic remains optimistic about the future of Wimbledon. He sees the expansion as a way to elevate the tournament to an even higher level of recognition and ensure its continued success in the years to come.
