WNBA players say league’s proposal for new CBA falls short after All-Star bargaining meeting
The WNBA players met with league officials in Indianapolis for collective bargaining negotiations, with a record number of players in attendance. The discussions took place with both sides expressing the need for significant improvements in the current deal.
Among the players present were All-Stars Caitlin Clark, Paige Bueckers, and Angel Reese, who donned business suits for the occasion. The meeting marked the first face-to-face interaction between players and the league since December, with both parties engaging in a productive dialogue for a couple of hours.
WNBPA President Nneka Ogwumike expressed her optimism about the meeting, highlighting the players’ commitment to driving positive change. The players are pushing for a better revenue-sharing model, increased salaries, improved benefits, and a more flexible salary cap to support the league’s growth and the younger players like Reese.
The discussions revealed a significant gap between the two sides, prompting the decision to schedule another meeting to further address the key issues. While progress may seem slow, both parties are committed to reaching a mutually beneficial agreement before the current CBA expires in October.
WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert emphasized the importance of listening to the players’ concerns and working towards a transformative deal. Despite the challenges, she remains optimistic about the possibility of reaching a resolution that benefits all stakeholders.
The players’ union highlighted the league’s unprecedented growth in various business metrics, including media rights, ratings, revenue, and attendance. However, they stressed the importance of fair compensation for the players who contribute to the league’s success, calling for a more sustainable and equitable system.
As the negotiations continue, both sides are confident that a deal can be reached before the looming deadline. With the players’ unwavering determination and the league’s commitment to progress, there is hope for a positive outcome that will benefit the entire WNBA community.
