Woman diagnosed with breast cancer at 27 after almost ignoring warning sign: “Hard to believe”
Marissa Coreno’s Journey: A Story of Resilience and Love
Marissa Coreno was embarking on a fresh chapter in her life in 2021. Moving out of her parents’ home, dedicating more time to the gym, and enjoying her job at a hospital in Ohio. However, her world was soon rattled when she discovered a lump in her armpit.
Initially unconcerned due to her young age and lack of family history of cancer, Coreno’s colleagues urged her to seek medical attention. An ultrasound, mammogram, and biopsy later, she received the devastating diagnosis of Stage II breast cancer that had spread to her lymph nodes.
An Increase in Young Diagnoses
Breast cancer has become a pressing issue for young women, with an uptick in diagnoses among those under 50. Dr. Mary Gemignani, a seasoned physician, notes the shift in demographics, with cases now emerging in the late 20s and early 30s.
Despite the rarity of breast cancer in women in their 20s, the challenges faced by younger patients are unique. Lack of regular screenings and the presence of more aggressive tumors pose additional hurdles. Dr. Gemignani emphasizes the importance of personalized treatment plans for young women like Coreno.
Connection Amid “Exhausting” Chemotherapy
Coreno’s treatment journey commenced with grueling chemotherapy to halt the cancer’s progression. Supported by her family, she navigated the side effects, including hair loss and fatigue. Amidst the challenges, a newfound connection blossomed with Anthony, offering a ray of light in her dark days.
Following chemotherapy, Coreno underwent a double mastectomy, reconstruction surgery, and radiation therapy. Hormone therapy and regular scans now form part of her ongoing care plan. Dr. Maiti affirms that Coreno is currently cancer-free and thriving as a survivor.
“Life is Beautiful”
The aftermath of treatment brought its own set of challenges, including early menopause and physical adjustments. Despite the hurdles, Coreno’s relationship with Anthony blossomed into marriage, with the couple celebrating milestones and cherishing their journey together.
Coreno’s resilience and optimism shine through as she shares her story, urging others to heed warning signs and prioritize their health. Her message of hope and perseverance resonates, emphasizing that there is light at the end of the tunnel, no matter how long it may seem.
