Woman says she was raped on Coney Island and witnesses just laughed and recorded
The Fourth of July celebrations turned into a nightmare for a Brooklyn woman named Melissa Harris, who alleged that she was raped on Coney Island beach while bystanders stood by, laughing and filming instead of coming to her rescue. Harris, 25, recounted the harrowing experience to CBS News, revealing that she tripped over a walking mat on the beach as she attempted to escape a man with “bad vibes” approaching her menacingly.
According to Harris, the man proceeded to force oral sex on her while she screamed for help, but instead of intervening, onlookers laughed and recorded the disturbing incident. Despite a brief moment when a golf cart shone a light on the assailant, the driver drove off without taking any action. Harris managed to break free and make her way to Stillwell Avenue, but her attacker followed her and raped her on the street.
Describing the traumatic ordeal, Harris pointed to the location where she was assaulted and expressed her feelings of fear and helplessness. She spoke of her disappointment in the lack of assistance from those present and emphasized the need for justice to be served. Harris revealed that she had arrived at the boardwalk after the fireworks display, sharing footage of a crowd gathered around a bonfire before the assault took place.
The Brooklyn native disclosed that she had been socializing with a group of people she had just met, and the perpetrator was among them. After the attacks, Harris claimed that the group fled the scene, leaving her alone to deal with the aftermath. Determined to find her attacker and prevent further harm, she bravely shared her story with the hope of bringing the perpetrator to justice.
Despite reaching out to the NYPD for assistance, Harris’s calls for help have gone unanswered. The authorities have yet to provide any additional information on the case, leaving Harris to seek support and justice through her public disclosure of the traumatic events that transpired on that fateful Fourth of July night.
