WVU football holds moment of silence for Washington DC National Guard shooting victims

The West Virginia Mountaineers football team faced off against the No. 5 Texas Tech Red Raiders in Morgantown on Saturday, but before the game began, the crowd observed a moment of silence to honor the two West Virginia National Guard soldiers who were shot in Washington, DC, earlier in the week. Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, and Sarah Beckstrom, 20, were recognized on the scoreboard as the crowd paid their respects.

The tragic shooting occurred near the White House, with Spc. Beckstrom succumbing to her injuries and Staff Sgt. Wolfe fighting for his life in critical condition. The suspected shooter, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national, was apprehended by other National Guardsmen after firing multiple rounds with a .357 revolver.

Lakanwal, who entered the US under Operation Allies Welcome, now faces charges of first-degree murder and assault with intent to kill while armed. The Department of Justice intends to seek the death penalty for his actions. The West Virginia community has rallied around Staff Sgt. Wolfe, with prayers and support pouring in for his recovery.

Despite the somber mood surrounding the National Guard shooting, the Mountaineers’ game against Texas Tech proceeded, but they were outmatched by the Red Raiders, who secured a 49-0 victory. The loss concluded West Virginia’s season with a 4-8 record.

The West Virginia Governor, Patrick Morrisey, and Rep. Riley Moore emphasized the importance of supporting the National Guard and highlighted the strong tradition of military service in the state. The community is deeply affected by the shooting, and efforts to aid Staff Sgt. Wolfe in his recovery continue.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the West Virginia football team’s defeat serves as a reminder of the resilience and unity of the state in the face of adversity. The game may have ended in a loss, but the strength and solidarity of the community endure.
