Yankees bullpen turns game into ugly loss to Tigers

The New York Yankees suffered a devastating loss on Tuesday night against the Detroit Tigers, with their bullpen imploding in historic fashion. Fernando Cruz and Mark Leiter Jr. combined to give up nine runs without recording a single out in the seventh inning, leading to a 12-2 blowout defeat at Yankee Stadium.

The Tigers capitalized on the Yankees’ pitching struggles, scoring nine runs in the seventh inning before the Bronx Bombers could even record an out. This disastrous performance made Cruz and Leiter the first pair of Yankees pitchers to both give up four or more earned runs without recording an out in a game. It was a nightmarish inning that highlighted the inconsistency of the Yankees bullpen throughout the season.

Despite a strong start from starting pitcher Will Warren, who pitched six solid innings of two-run ball, the Yankees were unable to overcome the bullpen meltdown. The loss dropped them three games back of the division-leading Blue Jays with only 18 games left in the season.

On a positive note, Aaron Judge made history by passing Yogi Berra for fifth place on the Yankees’ all-time home run list with his 359th career homer. However, the milestone was overshadowed by the team’s overall poor performance on the mound.

Manager Aaron Boone acknowledged the bullpen’s struggles but remained optimistic about their ability to bounce back. He emphasized the need for the bullpen to sync up and perform better in crucial moments, like the ones they faced against the Tigers.

The Tigers took advantage of Cruz’s early struggles, loading the bases and scoring runs on walks and hits. Leiter then entered the game and failed to stop the bleeding, allowing multiple runs before being pulled from the game.

Despite Tim Hill finally putting out the fire in the seventh inning, the damage was already done, and the Yankees were unable to mount a comeback. The Tigers’ offensive outburst coupled with the Yankees’ missed opportunities at the plate sealed their fate in a disappointing loss.

As the Yankees look to regroup and stay in the playoff hunt, they will need to address their bullpen issues and find more consistency down the stretch. With the postseason looming, every game becomes crucial, and the Bronx Bombers will need to tighten up their pitching to secure a spot in October.
