‘You’re going to regret it’
A recent incident in Rhode Island involving a Special Assistant Attorney General has sparked controversy after she demanded Newport police officers to shut off their body-worn cameras as she was being arrested for alleged trespassing. The prosecutor, Devon Hogan Flanagan, was found outside a restaurant with her friend Veronica Hannan when police responded to a call about an “unwanted party,” according to the Newport Police Department.
Bodycam footage released by the department captured Flanagan hurling threats and trying to intimidate officers with her job title. She insisted that the officers turn off their cameras, claiming it was protocol and a citizen’s request. Despite being asked to leave the premises, Flanagan and Hannan continued to argue with the officers, leading to their eventual arrest for trespassing.
Throughout the confrontation, Flanagan repeatedly mentioned her position as an Assistant Attorney General, attempting to use it as leverage over the officers. However, the officers remained firm and proceeded with the arrest despite her protests. Flanagan’s insistence on turning off the body cameras raised concerns about transparency and accountability in law enforcement interactions.
The Attorney General’s Office in Rhode Island clarified that Flanagan’s request to disable the cameras does not align with statewide policy, which only allows for such actions in specific cases involving victims and witnesses. Consent is generally not required to record interactions with the public, as stated in the Newport Police Department’s policy.
Following the incident, the Attorney General’s Office launched a review of Flanagan’s conduct, and she was later arraigned in court. The case has raised questions about the appropriate use of authority and the importance of accountability in law enforcement interactions. The Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office has yet to respond to inquiries about the incident.
Overall, the altercation between Flanagan and the Newport police officers highlights the complexities of maintaining professionalism and adherence to protocols in challenging situations. It serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency and respect in all interactions, regardless of one’s position or title.
