YouTube TV viewers could lose access to Fox channels over contract dispute
YouTube TV subscribers are facing the possibility of losing access to Fox content, including college football, as the current carriage agreement between the two sides nears its renewal deadline. If a new deal is not reached, Fox sports, business, and news channels could be pulled from the platform by 5 p.m. EST on Wednesday.
In a blog post, YouTube, owned by Google, stated that Fox was demanding payments that were significantly higher than what other partners with similar content offerings receive. The company expressed its desire to reach a fair deal that does not burden subscribers with additional costs. In the event that Fox content is unavailable on YouTube TV for an extended period, members will receive a $10 credit. Currently, YouTube TV’s base plan, which includes over 100 live channels, costs $82.99 per month.
Fox responded by expressing disappointment in Google’s negotiating tactics, accusing the tech giant of proposing terms that are out of line with industry standards. While Fox remains committed to reaching an agreement, viewers were warned that they could lose access to Fox programming on YouTube TV if a resolution is not reached soon. Subscribers were directed to keepfox.com for updates on the situation, including the potential loss of FS1 and the Big Ten Network.
FCC Chairman Brendan Carr weighed in on the dispute, urging Google to swiftly resolve the issue to ensure that viewers can continue to access the news and sports programming they enjoy. Carr emphasized the importance of reaching a deal before the upcoming Big Game between Texas and Ohio State.
Carriage fee disputes, which involve the payments that TV providers make to carry content from networks, are common in the industry. Negotiations often go down to the wire and may result in channels being temporarily removed from platforms until a new agreement is reached. Earlier this year, YouTube TV faced a similar situation with Paramount Global but ultimately reached a deal to continue carrying the company’s content.
YouTube TV, the largest streaming provider in terms of total time watched according to Nielsen, plays a significant role in the distribution of content to viewers. The outcome of the negotiations between YouTube TV and Fox will impact the availability of popular programming for millions of subscribers.
