Zionists swarm Breads Bakery after pro-Palestine employees unionize
A large crowd of Israel supporters gathered at a popular Jewish bakery in a show of solidarity with its owners after a group of employees demanded that the bakery cut ties with the Jewish State. The line outside Breads Bakery’s Upper West Side location extended down the block on Broadway, with some supporters wrapping themselves in the Israeli flag as they waited for hours.
“We’re pushing back quietly and with Jewish dignity against anti-Zionism and a hate moment,” said Elisha Fine, one of the supporters who purchased baked goods at the store to show their support. Fine, who rarely visits the bakery, felt compelled to stand up for the bakery after The Post reported on the newly formed “Breaking Breads Union.”
The union, made up of about a third of the bakery’s workers, demanded an end to the company’s support of Israel, accusing the Jewish State of genocide in Palestine. The bakery’s management denied these claims, stating that they do not engage in politics and that their focus is on baking and caring for their team. Breads Bakery has previously supported Jewish events, including fundraisers for Israel.
Many of the supporters who showed up at the bakery on Friday, some wearing stickers that said “Zionist,” wanted to show their support for the bakers and push back against the union’s demands. Fine, a Manhattan native, expressed concern about the union’s attempt to bring Israel politics into the bakery’s operations.
Leonor Katz, a 71-year-old supporter, described the union’s demands as “very upsetting,” while Avi Mendelson, 31, visited the bakery for the first time after hearing about the union. Mendelson expressed worries about the future of the Jewish community in New York under the new administration.
The Breaking Breads Union did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The outpouring of support from Israel supporters at Breads Bakery highlights the deep connection between the Jewish community and their cultural institutions, even in the face of challenges and controversies.
