Zohran Mamdani boasts he’s a ‘proud’ DSA member in response to GOP citizenship threats

Zohran Mamdani, a mayoral candidate in New York City, proudly declared himself as a “democratic socialist” in the face of threats from congressional Republicans to revoke his citizenship due to alleged discrepancies in his naturalization paperwork. Mamdani, 34, refuted claims of being a communist and emphasized his membership in the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) during his naturalization process in 2018.

Despite accusations from GOP members like Rep. Randy Fine and Rep. Andy Ogles, Mamdani remained steadfast in his identity as a democratic socialist. He highlighted the irony of Republicans being more focused on questioning his citizenship than addressing pressing issues like the government shutdown.

The controversy surrounding Mamdani’s citizenship stems from his affiliation with the DSA, which some Republicans categorize as a communist organization. However, Mamdani clarified that while there are communists within the DSA, the organization itself is not officially communist.

Born in Uganda and naturalized as a US citizen in 2018, Mamdani has consistently denied being a communist and has stood by his DSA membership. He criticized the Republican Party for targeting him over trivial matters while significant issues like healthcare access for millions of Americans remain unresolved.

In addition to the communist accusations, Rep. Ogles also raised concerns about Mamdani’s citizenship based on past lyrics that allegedly expressed support for Hamas terrorists. Despite these attempts to discredit him, Mamdani continues to lead in the polls ahead of the mayoral election on Nov. 4, surpassing competitors like Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa.

The ongoing scrutiny over Mamdani’s citizenship reflects the intense political climate surrounding the upcoming election. As he faces challenges from opponents seeking to undermine his credibility, Mamdani remains resolute in his commitment to democratic socialism and advocacy for progressive policies.
