New Data Reveals Massive Healthcare Data Breach Impacting Thousands

A recent cyber attack on a healthcare firm has resulted in tens of thousands of individuals being affected after hackers gained access to sensitive patient information. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights disclosed that Rocky Mountain Associated Physicians, based in Utah, reported a hacking incident affecting 50,640 individuals. The breach involved unauthorized access to a network server.

According to a report by HIPAA Journal, a forensic investigation found that on February 2, 2026, an unauthorized actor infiltrated certain systems, including a database containing protected health information of current and former patients. The compromised data potentially included names, dates of birth, contact details, Social Security numbers, medical record numbers, diagnosis and treatment information, and health insurance particulars. Additionally, some individuals’ financial information, such as debit and credit card numbers along with PINs, may have been exposed.

The report also revealed that a ransomware group claimed responsibility for the attack and published the organization’s data on a dark web leak site after a ransom demand went unmet. In response to the breach, Rocky Mountain Associated Physicians has enlisted third-party cybersecurity experts to investigate the incident and implement enhanced security measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Effected individuals are being notified of the breach and are being offered complimentary credit monitoring and identity theft protection services. The company is taking steps to ensure the security and privacy of its patients’ information moving forward.
