6x felon gets 15 years for back-to-back carjackings, including one outside migrant shelter
Marcus Montgomery Pleads Guilty to Two Carjackings in 30 Minutes
Notorious criminal Marcus Montgomery added to his extensive criminal record by pleading guilty to committing two carjackings within 30 minutes in late 2024. The incidents occurred in Old Town and outside a now-closed migrant shelter at the Salt Shed.
During the court proceedings, Cook County Judge Anjana Hansen sentenced the 40-year-old Montgomery to concurrent 15-year prison terms, as documented in court records.
The Carjacking Spree
The crime spree began on December 7, 2024, around noon in the 1400 block of North Cleveland. Montgomery targeted a 59-year-old New Berlin woman unloading her 2020 Subaru SUV. He demanded her keys and successfully stole the vehicle, although his attempt to take her purse was unsuccessful.
Moments later, Montgomery approached a 33-year-old Calumet City man sitting in his red Ford Mustang at the parking lot of the migrant shelter on North Elston. Brandishing a firearm, Montgomery threatened the man, forcing him to comply. The victim surrendered his belongings before Montgomery fled in the stolen Mustang.
During the investigation of the carjacking at the Salt Shed shelter, two migrants reported being robbed by Montgomery as well. The men, aged 24 and 34, witnessed Montgomery park the stolen Mustang before returning in the Subaru to rob them at gunpoint, taking various items including a wallet, keys, and a phone.
Police apprehended Montgomery after the migrants identified him near the stolen Mustang. A loaded handgun was found in his possession, along with all the stolen property from the victims recovered from his backpack. Additionally, the second victim’s stolen check was discovered in Montgomery’s wallet during a police inventory.
Although both migrants opted not to press charges, Montgomery’s criminal activities continued to escalate, culminating in his guilty plea and subsequent sentencing.
