Nintendo Switch 2 Hands-On Preview: Is it Worth it?

Nintendo fans around the world have been eagerly anticipating the release of the Nintendo Switch 2, and the recent Nintendo Direct event shed some light on what to expect. However, many questions still remained unanswered. To get a closer look at the new console, I attended the Nintendo Switch 2 Experience in London, where I had the opportunity to learn more about the device.

One of the standout features of the Nintendo Switch 2 is its durability. The new console boasts a larger 7.9-inch screen with a toughened glass cover, giving it a more robust feel compared to the original Switch. The device also features additional ports and cooling outlets, as well as a reinforced game card slot cover and a sturdier kickstand. Despite some early signs of wear and tear on the display, overall the Switch 2 appears to be a well-built and sturdy device.

In terms of display quality, the Switch 2 has opted for an LCD panel instead of OLED. While this may be a disappointment for some, the panel offers good contrast and color reproduction, with HDR capabilities enhancing the visual experience. The screen also appears to be laminated, reducing reflectivity and improving clarity.

One of the unique features of the Switch 2 is the Joy-Con 2 controllers, which attach to the console using magnets instead of rails. This new design offers a secure connection and a satisfying click when attached. While there is still some wiggle in the controllers, the overall attachment mechanism feels sturdy and reliable.

During the hands-on experience, I had the chance to try out several games on the Switch 2. Mario Kart World stood out as a title that showcased the console’s capabilities, with smooth gameplay and crisp visuals. Other titles like Metroid Prime 4 and Donkey Kong Bananza also impressed with their graphics and gameplay mechanics.

The Switch 2 also introduces a new control scheme with Mouse Mode, allowing for precision aiming and unique gameplay experiences. Accessories like grip cases for the Joy-Con 2 controllers can enhance comfort during extended gaming sessions. Additionally, the new Pro Controller offers integrated audio and a new ‘C’ button for accessing the Switch 2’s GameChat feature.

Overall, the Nintendo Switch 2 offers an exciting gaming experience with improved hardware and innovative features. The console is set to launch on June 5 in select markets, and fans can look forward to a new era of gaming with the Switch 2.
