SUVs pose greater risk of death or serious injury to pedestrians and cyclists, study shows

The risks associated with sports utility vehicles (SUVs) and light truck vehicles (LTVs) are a growing concern, especially when it comes to the safety of pedestrians and cyclists. A recent study conducted by researchers at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and Imperial College London has shed light on the alarming statistics surrounding collisions involving SUVs and LTVs.

The research, published in Injury Prevention, analyzed over 680,000 real-world collision data spanning 35 years. The findings revealed that the likelihood of a pedestrian or cyclist being fatally injured is 44% higher when hit by an SUV or LTV compared to smaller passenger cars. For children, the risk is even greater, with an 82% higher likelihood of being killed if struck by an SUV or LTV.

The study highlighted that SUVs and LTVs, due to their taller, wider, and heavier build, pose a significant threat to pedestrians and cyclists. The taller and blunter profile of these vehicles increases the severity of injuries in the event of a crash. This is particularly concerning for children, as their height makes them more vulnerable to the risks posed by these large vehicles.

As SUVs continue to gain popularity globally, accounting for 48% of new car sales in 2023, there is a pressing need to address the safety implications associated with these vehicles. The research indicated that replacing all SUVs with passenger cars could potentially reduce pedestrian and cyclist fatalities by 17% in the U.S. and 8% in Europe.

Elsa Robinson, a researcher involved in the study, emphasized the need for measures to discourage the use of large vehicles, especially in urban areas where pedestrians and cyclists are at higher risk. Anna Goodman, a senior author of the study, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the detrimental impact of the proliferation of SUVs on road safety efforts.

While the study provides valuable insights into the dangers posed by SUVs and LTVs, further research is needed to better understand the unique characteristics of these vehicles and their impact on pedestrian and cyclist safety.
