Special Mother’s Day gift for the ages: ‘Always going to be with you’

Mother’s Day was celebrated in a unique way this year, as some adventurous moms and their adult children opted for matching tattoos instead of the traditional brunch and flowers. Tattoo parlors across the city, from Red Hook Tattoo Parlor in Brooklyn to Igla Tattoo Studio in Manhattan, offered special deals to commemorate the special occasion with mom-themed designs.

Adam Korothy, a senior tattoo artist at Live By The Sword in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, emphasized the significance of getting a tattoo as a lasting memory. He mentioned that while flowers may wither away, a tattoo is something that will stay with you forever. Korothy, who proudly sports his own “Mom” heart tattoo, encouraged families to embrace the experience and make it a fun and memorable one.

One of the popular offerings at Live By The Sword was a 1-inch heart with “Mom” written across it, which was chosen by at least one duo on Mother’s Day weekend. The shop also welcomed younger kids who watched as their mothers got tattooed, turning the experience into a bonding moment for the entire family.

Matching tattoos for moms and their adult children have seen a surge in popularity in recent years, as tattoos have become more widely accepted and destigmatized. Korothy noted that many moms who were tattooed before having kids are now getting inked alongside their adult children, creating a unique bond through shared body art.

Aside from the sentimental value, tattoo parlors also offer promotions and discounts to attract customers, especially during times of economic uncertainty. Isabella Dizon and Carolina Mogollon at Nice Tattoo Parlor in Williamsburg mentioned that they frequently do tattoos honoring motherhood, with many moms opting to celebrate their own journey through permanent ink.

At Igla Tattoo Studio in Manhattan, 18-year-old Ella Lygran got her second tattoo, replicating her grandmother’s handwriting from a card she received at birth. The shop’s artist, Olha Terekh, highlighted the popularity of maternity-themed tattoos, such as birth-month flower bouquets and loved ones’ fingerprints, as a way for people to immortalize their family connections.

Ultimately, getting a tattoo in honor of a loved one, especially on Mother’s Day, is a way to create a lasting memory that will always be with you. Just like family, a tattoo is a permanent reminder of the love and bond shared between individuals, making it a meaningful and personal choice for many.
