Satou Sabally makes massive statement and puts WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert on blast: “Not really responsible”

Phoenix Mercury forward Satou Sabally made headlines on Saturday when she publicly criticized WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert over the league’s decision to expand the schedule for the 2025 season. Following the Mercury’s loss to the Seattle Storm, Sabally, who also serves as a WNBPA player representative, did not mince words when expressing her discontent with the increased number of games.

In her candid remarks, Sabally questioned the league’s leadership for prioritizing expansion over player well-being. She emphasized that WNBA athletes deserve to be treated as professionals and should not be expected to compete at a high level every other day without adequate rest and recovery.

“This is a conversation that could also be important for the next CBA. Cathy (Engelbert) added a lot of games… We put our bodies on the line every single time. We had 9 games in 18 days. It’s not really responsible for a commissioner,” Sabally stated.

The frustration expressed by Sabally stems from the demanding schedule that the Phoenix Mercury have faced since the season began on May 16. The team has played a league-high 10 games in a short span, often with games scheduled every other day, leaving little time for recuperation.

Despite the challenging circumstances, Sabally has continued to showcase tremendous growth and performance on the court this season. The star forward has been a key player for the Mercury, leading the team in the absence of key players like Kahleah Copper. Sabally’s consistent performances have been instrumental in the team’s impressive 6-4 record through 10 games.

Reflecting on her development and leadership role within the team, Sabally remains focused on improving and learning from each game, win or lose. Her season statistics speak volumes about her impact, averaging 20.5 points per game while contributing in rebounds, assists, steals, and maintaining a solid plus/minus rating.

In conclusion, Sabally’s bold remarks and stellar performance on the court highlight the challenges faced by WNBA players in a demanding schedule. As the league continues to evolve, it is crucial for player well-being to be a top priority, ensuring that athletes are treated with the professionalism and respect they deserve.
