36,659 Americans Warned As Data Breach May Have Exposed Names, Addresses, Social Security Numbers, Health Records, Bank Account Numbers and More

Cybersecurity Breach Exposes Sensitive Data of Thousands at Cumberland County Hospital

An alarming cybersecurity incident has come to light, revealing that the personal, health, and financial records of tens of thousands of Americans may have been compromised. According to the latest report from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights, a total of 36,659 individuals have been affected by a hacking/IT breach at Cumberland County Hospital (CCH).

CCH has disclosed that an unidentified attacker managed to infiltrate their systems and access a vast amount of sensitive information belonging to both patients and employees. The stolen data potentially includes names, dates of birth, addresses, contact numbers, email addresses, ethnic backgrounds, Social Security numbers, medical histories, treatment details, service dates, medical record identifiers, insurance details, as well as claims and billing data.

Furthermore, the breach extends to the personal information of current and former staff members, encompassing driver’s license details, birth certificates, background screening results, tax forms (W-4 and W-2), and bank account numbers.

“On April 3, 2025, CCH detected unauthorized access by a third party to our computer network. Immediate actions were taken, including shutting down all systems, severing data connections, notifying law enforcement, and launching an investigation…

Cybersecurity experts have determined that the unauthorized access occurred between February 21, 2025, and April 3, 2025. Fortunately, the breach did not involve the electronic medical records system utilized by CCH and its affiliates for patient care and billing purposes.”

Based in Kentucky, Cumberland County Hospital is a healthcare facility offering a wide range of outpatient and inpatient services to the community. The hospital has already commenced the process of notifying affected individuals about the security breach through official letters, along with providing complimentary identity monitoring services for a duration of 12 months.

CCH has assured the public that stringent security measures have been put in place by its IT team to prevent any similar breaches in the future. The hospital remains committed to safeguarding the privacy and confidentiality of its patients and employees.
