Apple admits to delays in Siri AI overhaul at WWDC presentation

Apple has acknowledged that it requires more time to finalize the long-awaited revamp of the Siri voice assistant, signaling CEO Tim Cook’s struggle to meet investor expectations for artificial intelligence innovation.

At the Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple revealed setbacks in AI development, a once cutting-edge event that has lost some of its allure in recent years.

Regarding the delays to Siri’s AI overhaul, Apple software chief Craig Federighi stated, “This work needed more time to reach our high quality bar and we look forward to sharing more about it in the coming year.”

Apple introduced plans to allow app developers to utilize the large language model powering its AI systems, known as “Apple Intelligence.” The company also announced a significant design overhaul of its operating systems with a new look called “Liquid Glass.”

Wedbush analyst Dan Ives, a supporter of Apple, described the event as showcasing “slow and steady improvements” but overall lackluster.

“WWDC laid out the vision for developers BUT was void of any major Apple Intelligence progress as Cupertino is playing it safe and close to the vest after the missteps last year,” Ives noted in a client communication.

During the event, Apple highlighted a “live translation” tool for real-time conversations and a shift to naming operating system updates based on the release year. Apple also unveiled features like “Call Screening” and a partnership with OpenAI’s ChatGPT for image generation in its “Image Playground” app.

Despite a slight decline in Apple shares during the keynote, the company continues to prioritize ensuring its major AI products are well-prepared for launch to avoid disappointing its dedicated user base.

Apple is engaged in fierce competition with rivals like Google and OpenAI, with a focus on maintaining its prominence in the AI landscape.
