‘Andor’ Casting Team on Populating Ghorman and Finding Young Kleya

Nina Gold and Martin Ware, known for their work in the “Star Wars” universe, have recently completed casting for the Disney Plus series “Andor,” a prequel to the film “Rogue One.” Despite challenges brought on by the pandemic during the first season, the second season was more smooth sailing thanks to the well-received first season and the impeccable writing of creator Tony Gilroy.

One of the challenges in Season 2 was populating the planet Ghorman, which faced oppression from the Imperial Empire. The storyline began to mirror real-world events, with ongoing protests and a propaganda campaign by the Empire leading to bloodshed in Episode 8, known as the Ghorman Massacre.

In casting Season 2, Gold and Ware discovered new talent to join the ensemble, including Elizabeth Dulau as Kleya Marki and Kyle Soller as deputy inspector Syril Karn. Muhannad Bhaier, who had a small role in Season 1, impressed the creators and was given a larger part in Season 2.

French actors were introduced for the Ghorman storyline, inspired by Parisian fashion of the 1930s. The actors had to perform in a fictitious language, adding to the challenge. One of the biggest tasks was casting a young version of Kleya, which was successfully accomplished with the discovery of April V. Woods.

Gold and Ware are always on the lookout for new talent, often scouting drama schools and comedy shows for fresh faces. They encourage actors to be prepared but flexible in auditions, as casting directors often remember actors for future roles.

Overall, the casting process for “Andor” Season 2 was a success, with the duo showcasing their talent for discovering and nurturing new actors. The series continues to be a platform for rising talent in the industry, with Gold and Ware at the helm of bringing these characters to life on screen.
