Florida scammer posing as doctor gave Botox injections in backyard shed, causing woman to suffer facial paralysis: cops
A recent incident in Florida has brought to light the dangers of unlicensed medical practices, as a fraudster was caught posing as a doctor and administering Botox injections in a backyard “med spa” shed. The shady operation left one victim with facial paralysis and raised concerns about the importance of researching facilities and professionals before undergoing any procedures.
The perpetrator, Rosa Mena, 50, was apprehended after a patient reported the botched procedure to the Port St. Lucie Police Department. Authorities discovered a stash of Botox, syringes, and other medical supplies in the makeshift clinic located behind Mena’s residence on Coosa Drive. The victim, who paid over $300 for the injection, experienced paralysis in her face following the treatment.
The police department issued a warning to the public, emphasizing the need to verify the credentials of both the facility and the individual performing medical procedures. They stressed that injectable procedures like Botox should only be carried out by licensed professionals to ensure the safety of patients.
The victim recounted visiting Mena’s backyard shed in May for the procedure, only to be left with adverse effects. Despite receiving a refund and being persuaded to return for another treatment session, the victim continued to experience complications. When she demanded to see Mena’s medical license, the fraudster presented an altered and expired phlebotomy certificate, falsely claiming to be a doctor from the Dominican Republic.
Following a thorough investigation, law enforcement seized a variety of medical equipment and supplies from the illegal operation, including medical beds, medications, vials, needles, fat sculpting machines, PRP injections, micro-needling and laser hair removal equipment, laser lipo machines, massage and facial devices, and injectables for fillers and Botox.
Mena now faces charges of aggravated battery, practicing medicine without a valid license, fraud, and use of a two-way communication device to facilitate a felony. She is currently detained at St. Lucie County Jail on a $95,000 bond.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of conducting thorough research and due diligence when seeking medical treatments, especially ones involving injectables and cosmetic procedures. Patients should always verify the credentials of healthcare providers and facilities to avoid falling victim to fraudulent practices.
