Panthers’ Xavier Legette, Browns’ Rayshawn Jenkins brawl in first preseason game

It didn’t take long for tensions to escalate during the NFL preseason as Panthers wide receiver Xavier Legette and Browns safety Rayshawn Jenkins got into a heated altercation on the field. The incident occurred during the first quarter of Friday night’s preseason game at Bank of America Stadium, where Shedeur Sanders made his debut by throwing his first two touchdown passes as a professional quarterback.

The confrontation between Legette and Jenkins erupted after a play when Jenkins appeared to grab Legette’s face mask, prompting the wide receiver to retaliate with punches as they both fell to the ground. Jenkins then seemed to rip off Legette’s helmet before referees and players from both teams intervened. As a result, both players were ejected from the game.

According to a report by FOX Sports Radio1340’s Sheena Quick, Jenkins had thrown a helmet at Panthers running back Chuba Hubbard during a joint practice between the two teams earlier in the week, which may have contributed to the altercation during the game.

Legette, a second-year player for the Panthers, was drafted in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft and is looking to make an impact in Carolina this season. On the other hand, Jenkins recently signed with the Browns in May after being released by the Seahawks earlier in the year.

The incident between Legette and Jenkins serves as a reminder of the intensity and competitiveness of NFL preseason games, where emotions can run high as players compete for roster spots and starting positions. Despite the heated exchange, both players will have to regroup and focus on the remainder of the preseason as they look to make an impact for their respective teams in the upcoming season.
