NYC carjacker seriously injures 87-year-old woman in wild morning crime spree: prosecutors
Kevin Dubuisson, a 28-year-old alleged serial carjacker, found himself behind bars without bail on Sunday following a chaotic crime spree in Queens that resulted in the shooting of an NYPD officer. Shocking new details of his rampage have emerged, shedding light on the extent of the violence and chaos he caused.
The incident began on Friday morning when Dubuisson attempted to violently steal two cars, threatened to “kill” a victim, and ultimately left an 87-year-old woman with brain injuries. The elderly woman was being assisted from her car by her daughter when Dubuisson backed into them at high speed with an SUV he had just stolen. The impact left the woman with a fractured wrist, a cut on her head, blood loss, and a brain bleed. Her daughter also sustained injuries in the incident.
Dubuisson, who was already on parole for a 2023 attempted robbery and had a history of at least 10 arrests, showed little remorse for the injuries he caused. In a chilling statement to investigators, he described seeing the injured woman on the ground but seemed unfazed by her condition.
At his arraignment, Dubuisson faced 14 charges including assault, robbery, grand larceny, menacing, and assaulting a police officer. The criminal complaint outlined his destructive path, starting at a gas station where he attempted to steal a car and threatened bystanders with violence. He later targeted an Uber driver, brandishing a crowbar and forcibly taking the keys to the vehicle.
Police officers quickly responded to the scene, surrounding Dubuisson in the stolen vehicle. In the ensuing chaos, Detective Corey Fisher was accidentally shot by friendly fire, sustaining serious injuries that required surgery. Despite his actions leading to the shooting of an officer, Dubuisson initially lied to investigators, claiming he had a gun and intended to scare his victims.
Queens County District Attorney Melinda Katz condemned Dubuisson’s actions, stating that his reckless behavior set off a chain of events that resulted in Detective Fisher’s hospitalization. Law enforcement sources revealed that Dubuisson’s crime spree may have started even earlier, with suspicions of car theft and other offenses.
If convicted, Dubuisson faces up to 32 years in prison for his crimes. The community is left reeling from the violence and chaos brought on by his actions, highlighting the need for swift justice and accountability in cases of such egregious criminal behavior.
