Sagapolutele throws for 3 touchdowns and California downs Oregon State 34-15

California’s freshman quarterback, Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele, made an impressive debut in their 34-15 victory over Oregon State. Sagapolutele, who transferred from Oregon to Cal, threw for 234 yards and three touchdowns, completing 20 of 30 passes. This performance drew comparisons to Jared Goff, the only other freshman to start in an opener for the Golden Bears.

On the other side, Oregon State’s quarterback Maalik Murphy, a transfer from Duke, threw for 244 yards with one interception. Trent Walker stood out with nine catches for 136 yards. Despite their efforts, the Beavers couldn’t keep up with Cal’s offensive prowess.

The game marked a meeting of two teams that used to be Pac-12 rivals before Cal moved to the ACC. Oregon State is currently playing as an independent but will rejoin a new-look Pac-12 next season alongside Washington State and several other teams.

Sagapolutele wasted no time making an impact, connecting with Mason Mini for a 19-yard touchdown on Cal’s first possession. He later found Trond Grizzell for a 32-yard score. Caleb Ojeda kicked a 53-yard field goal for Oregon State, but Cal maintained control with Abram Murray’s 49-yard field goal before halftime.

In the second half, Sagapolutele continued to shine, throwing a 4-yard touchdown pass to Landon Morris. Oregon State managed to score with Anthony Hankerson’s 2-yard run, but Cal responded with Brandon High Jr.’s 2-yard rushing touchdown after a key interception.

Murphy scored a 3-yard keeper for the Beavers but appeared to be injured on the play. However, he returned for the next drive. Chase Meyer sealed the win for Cal with a 23-yard field goal.

Looking ahead, Cal will face Texas Southern at Memorial Stadium, while Oregon State will host Fresno State, a future Pac-12 opponent. The game showcased Sagapolutele’s potential as a standout quarterback for Cal and highlighted the budding connection between Murphy and Walker for Oregon State.
