Boar’s Head is secretly paying out millions to dozens of victims of last year’s listeria outbreak

Boar’s Head Pays $4 Million to Widow in Listeria Outbreak Case

Boar’s Head has compensated a Long Island widow with $4 million after her husband passed away from consuming contaminated liverwurst, in connection to a secretive series of settlements linked to a lethal listeria outbreak at the company’s Virginia plant.

Robert Hamilton, aged 73, fell ill shortly after eating a Boar’s Head sandwich and was admitted to Nassau University Medical Center on July 12, 2024, where he eventually succumbed to his illness six days later.

Kathleen Hamilton, Robert’s wife of 55 years, is one of many affected families who have received compensation from Boar’s Head as the company strives to move past the scandal surrounding the outbreak.

The outbreak has been linked to unsanitary conditions at Boar’s Head’s closed Jarratt, Va. facility, where federal inspectors discovered various hygiene issues.

The company, with an estimated yearly revenue of $3 billion, has also settled with around 66,000 customers who were affected by the recall but did not receive refunds.

Despite ongoing lawsuits and unresolved cases, Boar’s Head is planning to reopen the Jarratt facility, emphasizing their commitment to food safety and consumer well-being.

Legal representatives of the victims underscore the urgency with which Boar’s Head is handling the settlements, contrasting it with the usual delay tactics employed by large corporations in similar situations.

While some cases have been resolved, numerous others remain pending, with more individuals coming forward as the statute of limitations for food-related claims continues.
