Meghan Markle’s half sister Samantha suffers setback as judge casts doubt on latest legal appeal

Meghan Markle has received a significant victory in her ongoing legal battle with her estranged half sister, Samantha Markle. Samantha, 60, had filed a $75,000 lawsuit against the Duchess of Sussex, 44, in federal court in Florida, alleging that Meghan made false and malicious statements about her during an interview with Oprah Winfrey.

However, the lawsuit was dismissed by a federal judge last year. Undeterred, Samantha took her case to the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Jacksonville, but the judges seemed skeptical of her appeal. Chief US Circuit Judge William Pryor expressed doubts about the appeal and questioned whether it addressed the original ruling by Judge Charlene Edwards Honeywell.

Samantha’s legal team argued that Meghan’s remarks in the interview amounted to defamation by implication and had damaged her reputation. They claimed that Meghan’s words were meant to destroy Samantha and had led to death threats and public hatred.

Despite the ongoing legal battle, no verdict has been reached yet. However, Judge Pryor’s comments indicate that Samantha’s case may not be in a strong position. Prior to this filing, Samantha had initially filed the libel lawsuit against Meghan in late 2022, two years after the Sussexes left royal life and moved to the US.

Meghan’s legal team had previously dismissed Samantha’s claims, stating that they would give the case minimal attention as it deserved. Their estranged father, Thomas Markle Sr., had also expressed his willingness to testify in Samantha’s case.

In a previous ruling, a Florida judge dismissed Samantha’s lawsuit against Meghan, stating that Meghan’s remarks were opinions and not capable of being proven false. Samantha had also demanded that Meghan retract allegations made against the royal family and claims that she and their father sold stories to British tabloids.

Samantha argued that Meghan’s comments had subjected her to humiliation and hatred, but Meghan’s lawyer defended her right to express opinions and criticize under the First Amendment.

Overall, Meghan Markle’s legal victory against her half-sister Samantha Markle highlights the complexities and challenges of defamation cases in the public eye. The ongoing legal battle continues to unfold, with both parties firmly standing their ground.
