Lionel Messi has goal and assist for Inter Miami in 3-1 MLS win over Seattle Sounders
Inter Miami secured a 3-1 victory over Seattle on Tuesday night, seeking redemption after their 3-0 loss to the Sounders in the Leagues Cup final just over two weeks ago.
Lionel Messi played a pivotal role in Inter Miami’s triumph, contributing a goal and an assist to lead his team to victory. In the 12th minute, Messi showcased his playmaking abilities by setting up Jordi Alba with a precise outside-of-the-foot pass, giving the Herons an early lead. Despite hitting the post in the 28th minute, Messi redeemed himself shortly after when Alba returned the favor, assisting Messi to double the score in the 41st minute.
Ian Fray extended Inter Miami’s lead early in the second half, heading home a corner from Rodrigo De Paul to make it 3-0. Reflecting on the win, Fray mentioned that the previous defeat served as motivation for the team. Seattle managed to pull one back in the 69th minute, with Obed Vargas finding the back of the net on Mexico’s independence day.
The absence of Luis Suárez, serving a three-match MLS ban for an incident in the Leagues Cup final, did not hinder Inter Miami’s performance. Messi had a chance to score a brace in the 76th minute but was denied by Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei. The debut of Mateo Silvetti, a new signing from Messi’s former club Newell’s Old Boys, added depth to Inter Miami’s lineup.
Looking ahead, Inter Miami will face D.C. United on Saturday, while the Sounders will travel to take on Austin FC on Sunday. The MLS action promises to be exciting as both teams aim to continue their momentum in the league.
