Inside Mamdani’s Zooms with business leaders

Zohran Mamdani has been putting in extra hours recently to win over top executives, nonprofit leaders, and real estate developers, according to sources.

The mayoral candidate has been participating in numerous Zoom meetings to engage with the individuals who will be footing the bill for his proposed $10 billion increase in annual spending.

Kathy Wylde, the head of the Partnership for New York City, an organization comprised of hundreds of CEOs dedicated to enhancing the business environment, has hosted multiple Zoom calls with Mamdani in recent weeks. These calls have mainly involved executives who had previously canceled meetings with him but have now become more realistic about his chances of winning.

“Since the primary, there has been a refinement in his policy proposals,” Wylde shared. “At least he is taking into consideration questions like ‘how do you freeze rents without freezing costs’.”

A source who attended one of the Zoom meetings pointed out that the series of discussions between Mamdani and business leaders does not indicate a shift in loyalties.

“We’ve had a relationship with Cuomo for 30 years… Mamdani is a recent player—it doesn’t mean we support him,” a New York native and experienced CEO shared.

During some of the Zoom calls, Mamdani has also sought to reassure these individuals about his backing for police commissioner Jessica Tisch—a topic that frequently arises in these conversations.
