AOC throws cold water on fellow lefty’s primary challenge to Hakeem Jeffries

Rep. Ocasio-Cortez Does Not Support Primary Challenge Against Hakeem Jeffries

Progressive leader Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez has made it clear that she does not endorse a primary challenge against House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries by New York City Councilman Chi Ossé.

Ocasio-Cortez, a member of the far-left “Squad” representing parts of The Bronx and Queens, initially stated that she was unaware of Ossé’s recently filed primary bid. However, she later expressed her belief that a primary challenge against the House leader is not a good idea at this time.

In a statement to reporters on Monday, Ocasio-Cortez emphasized the importance of finding alternative ways to address issues in New York City without resorting to a primary challenge against Jeffries.

Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani also refrained from endorsing Ossé’s bid, highlighting a reluctance among left-leaning politicians to support a primary challenge against Jeffries.

Mamdani’s decision not to back Ossé’s campaign comes as he seeks to establish relationships with the establishment wing of the Democratic Party in New York City.

Jeffries, known for withholding his endorsement of the Democratic mayoral nominee until shortly before the election, and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer never endorsed Mamdani during his mayoral campaign.

Ossé, a 27-year-old City Council member known for sponsoring the successful FARE Act, which eliminated broker fees for tenants in New York City, did not respond to requests for comment on the matter.
