Shopify outage disrupts Cyber Monday shopping for some merchants
Shopify Experiences Outage on Cyber Monday
On Cyber Monday, one of the busiest online shopping days of the year, Shopify faced a major outage that disrupted retailers using the e-commerce platform. Thousands of users reported difficulties logging in, impacting their ability to conduct business. According to Downdector, outage reports peaked at 11 a.m. EDT with around 4,000 complaints before gradually decreasing.
Merchants rely on Shopify’s technology to build online stores, process payments, manage inventory, and handle various retail transactions. Additionally, the company offers point-of-sale hardware to streamline operations for businesses.
At 2:31 p.m. EDT, Shopify issued an alert on its status page, acknowledging and resolving an issue with the login authentication flow. The company stated that they were observing signs of recovery following the outage. Despite repeated attempts, Shopify did not provide immediate comments on the situation.
The timing of the outage was particularly unfortunate for Shopify, coinciding with Cyber Monday, a day that typically drives significant online sales. Adobe Analytics projects a record-breaking $14.2 billion in online consumer spending, representing a 6.3% increase from the previous year.
