Incriminating internet searches preceded murder of man found shot and dismembered in fire: ‘What happens if you kill someone?’

Deparris Slaughter, a 32-year-old man from Chicago, has been accused of killing and dismembering his 68-year-old roommate, Michael Lipford, in a gruesome and horrific crime. Prosecutors revealed that Slaughter performed a series of disturbing internet searches related to murder, dismemberment, and removing forensic evidence before firefighters made the gruesome discovery of Lipford’s remains in a burning South Side home.

According to prosecutors, Slaughter allegedly shot Lipford inside the home they shared on the 2300 block of South Kirkland and then set the building on fire. Firefighters responded to the scene on March 7 after reports of a fire and discovered Lipford’s naked and dismembered body in the basement hallway. His arms were found inside a garbage bag next to his body, his right leg was located nearby, and his left leg was partially removed. The medical examiner determined that Lipford died from a gunshot wound to the neck before being burned and dismembered.

Evidence found at the scene included two reciprocating saws, gloves, and other items. The fire was started in three different locations in the house, including where Lipford’s body was found, with gasoline detected in the remnants. Investigators also uncovered Slaughter’s activities in the days leading up to the crime, including renting a U-Haul van, purchasing a dolly, buying ammonia, and acquiring a Pontiac from a car dealership.

Slaughter’s phone records and activities were closely monitored, leading to his eventual arrest. Police found incriminating evidence in his possession, including a firearm with ballistics matching the bullet found in Lipford’s body. Slaughter’s phone contained a disturbing list of internet searches related to murder methods, dismemberment techniques, and removing forensic evidence, indicating premeditation and planning behind the heinous crime.

Slaughter has been charged with first-degree murder, residential arson, dismembering a human body, and concealing a homicidal death. He has been ordered detained pending trial by Judge Susana Ortiz. The details of this chilling case highlight the importance of thorough investigation and forensic analysis in solving violent crimes.
