Wrexham owners Ryan Reynolds Rob Mac add Apollo Sports Capital to boost rising soccer club
Wrexham’s Celebrity Owners Sell Minority Stake in Club to Apollo Sports Capital
Wrexham’s celebrity owners, Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac, have recently announced the sale of a minority stake in their rapidly rising soccer club to Apollo Sports Capital, a US-based private equity firm. The deal, which was made public on Monday, includes investment by Apollo in the redevelopment of Wrexham’s stadium and the surrounding area in the small Welsh city that has gained international attention since the American actors took ownership in 2021 and featured the club in a popular docuseries.
Since Reynolds and Mac acquired the club, Wrexham, the oldest club in Wales dating back to 1864, has achieved three consecutive promotions in the English soccer system, leading them to the second-division Championship for the current season, just one level below the prestigious Premier League. As of this week, Wrexham holds the 12th position in the 24-team standings, marking their return to the second division after a long absence since the 1981-82 season.
In a statement released by the club, the Wrexham ownership expressed their commitment to building a sustainable future for the football club while maintaining the unique spirit of the town. They emphasized their goal of reaching the Premier League while staying true to the community’s values. The partnership with Apollo Sports Capital is seen as a significant step towards achieving this ambitious vision.
Last year, Reynolds and Mac sold a stake in the club to another US-based investment group. Apollo Sports Capital, known for its recent acquisition of a majority stake in Spanish soccer club Atletico Madrid, continues to expand its presence in the global sports market with the investment in Wrexham. The terms of the deal with Apollo have not been disclosed to the public.
The involvement of Apollo in the development of Wrexham’s stadium and the surrounding area is expected to enhance the club’s infrastructure and contribute to its long-term success. With the continued support of dedicated partners like Apollo, Wrexham is poised to make further strides in the competitive world of professional soccer.
As Wrexham continues its journey towards the pinnacle of English football, the collaboration with Apollo Sports Capital signifies a new chapter in the club’s history, driven by a shared vision of excellence and growth in the sport.
