Anthony Duclair scores hat trick in Islanders’ destruction of Devils
On January 6, 2025, Anthony Duclair had a standout performance for the New York Islanders, scoring a natural hat trick in a 9-0 victory over the New Jersey Devils. This marked a significant moment for Duclair, who had been through a rollercoaster ride since joining the Islanders 17 months ago.
When Duclair signed with the Islanders in July 2024, there were high hopes for him to form a dynamic top line with Mathew Barzal and Bo Horvat. However, injuries and inconsistent play had hindered his progress, leading to a frustrating journey for both Duclair and the team.
After being a healthy scratch for much of the season and playing on the fourth line, Duclair seized the opportunity in his return to the lineup. His hat trick performance showcased the speed and scoring ability that the Islanders had envisioned when they signed him.
Duclair’s first two goals came in similar fashion, with him beating Devils’ goaltender Jacob Markstrom from the left circle on odd-man rushes. He completed his hat trick with a one-timer from the right circle, capping off a dominant performance.
In addition to his hat trick, Duclair also tallied an assist on Tony DeAngelo’s goal, tying a career-high with four points in a game. His offensive outburst overshadowed goaltender Ilya Sorokin’s 44-save shutout, setting a new franchise record for the Islanders.
While the Devils dominated possession and play throughout the game, it was Duclair’s scoring touch that made the difference. Markstrom’s struggles in net allowed the Islanders to capitalize on their opportunities and secure a commanding victory.
The Islanders’ depth and resilience were on full display, with contributions from Barzal, Pulock, Pelech, and others. The team’s ability to overcome injuries and adversity contrasted sharply with the Devils’ struggles, as they faced mounting pressure from their fan base and a precarious position in the standings.
As the Islanders continue to ride a wave of success, the Devils find themselves in a crisis, with discontent among fans and uncertainty surrounding their playoff hopes. Duclair’s standout performance served as a reminder of the potential he brings to the team and the impact he can have when given the opportunity to shine.
