Vivek Ramaswamy’s bodyguard hit with federal drug trafficking charges — was allegedly dealing fentanyl, meth and steroids

Ohio gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy’s family bodyguard, Justin Salsburey, found himself in hot water last week when he was arrested and charged with federal drug trafficking. The arrest came after authorities discovered a stash of illegal drugs at the home he shared with his bodybuilder wife, Ruthann Rankin.

The search warrant executed at the couple’s residence revealed pills containing fentanyl, methamphetamine, MDMA, as well as steroids, some of which were cleverly hidden in nicotine pouch containers. Salsburey, who was employed by a private security firm contracted by Ramaswamy’s family, had provided protective services to the candidate. However, upon learning of the arrest, the security firm promptly removed him from the security detail.

The discovery of Salsburey’s alleged drug dealing operation came to light in November 2025 when postal inspectors received a tip about the couple receiving shipments of bulk narcotics. Further investigation revealed that the couple had received 31 parcels with postage purchased using cryptocurrency, a common method for shipping items from darknet marketplaces.

A trash pull conducted at the couple’s home yielded empty glass vials, syringes, and baggies that tested positive for fentanyl. In addition, a package intercepted by authorities contained blue pills resembling counterfeit oxycontin, which tested positive for fentanyl. Further surveillance of the couple revealed them leaving items in a cooler on their porch for others to pick up.

One individual who collected a package from the cooler admitted to purchasing Adderall from the couple. A subsequent search of the couple’s home uncovered a significant quantity of drugs, including fentanyl, methamphetamine, MDMA, and other controlled substances and steroids. Rankin, who is a schoolteacher and bodybuilder, disclosed to authorities that Salsburey started selling steroids, which eventually led to the sale of other drugs.

Both Salsburey and Rankin have been charged with conspiracy to distribute or intent to distribute fentanyl and methamphetamine, as well as possession with intent to distribute these substances. The couple’s arrest has caused a stir in the Ohio governor’s race, where Ramaswamy currently holds a slight lead over Democrat Amy Acton, according to the latest polling data.

The Ramaswamy campaign has expressed shock and concern over the news, emphasizing their commitment to safety and accountability. They have assured the public that all necessary background checks and drug screenings were conducted on Salsburey before his employment, and they support efforts to hold those responsible for the allegations accountable if proven true.
