Judge and his wife shot inside suburban Indiana home, shooter remains at large

A shocking incident took place at the suburban Indiana home of Judge Steven Meyer and his wife, Kimberly, on Sunday, resulting in both of them being shot and wounded. The Lafayette Police Department reported that the couple was attacked just before 2:30 p.m. at their residence on Mill Pond Lane in Lafayette. Judge Meyer, 66, suffered an arm injury, while Kimberly sustained a hip injury during the shooting.

According to a 911 call, the suspect knocked on the door claiming to have the couple’s dog before firing a shot through the door. The couple was rushed to a local hospital and are currently in stable condition. Judge Meyer remains hospitalized in stable condition as of Monday, as confirmed by Indiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Loretta Rush.

Authorities found shell casings at the scene, but the suspect, armed with a gun, remains at large. The motive behind the attack and a description of the shooter have not been disclosed by the authorities. Chief Justice Rush expressed her relief that the couple survived the attack and emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of judges and their families.

An investigation involving multiple agencies, including the Lafayette Police Department, Indiana State Police, Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office, West Lafayette Police Department, Tippecanoe County Prosecutor’s Office, and the FBI, is ongoing. Residents are urged to stay vigilant and report any information about the shooting or the suspect to local law enforcement.

Kimberly Meyer expressed confidence in the ongoing police investigation and gratitude for the support from the community. She thanked the medical personnel for their care and assistance following the incident. Judge Meyer, who had announced his retirement at the end of 2026 after serving as a Tippecanoe Superior Court 2 judge for 12 years, has been a respected figure in the community. Prior to his judicial career, he served on the Lafayette City Council for 23 years.
