2 robbed of cell phones in pair of NYC stick-ups down block from Central Park: cops
Two individuals fell victim to cellphone robberies at knifepoint in separate incidents on the Upper West Side, just a stone’s throw away from Central Park. The first incident occurred at approximately 7:15 p.m. when a masked perpetrator approached a 29-year-old man inside a building on West 85th Street near Columbus Avenue. The assailant brandished a knife, stole the man’s cellphone, and then fled the scene on foot. Described as a 5-foot-8 male with a dark complexion, wearing a black face mask, green winter jacket, and dark-colored pants, the suspect managed to escape without causing harm to the victim.
Later that evening around 11 p.m., a 42-year-old woman was targeted by two perpetrators on West 76th Street near Columbus Avenue. The duo also wielded a knife, snatched the woman’s phone, and pushed her to the ground before fleeing the scene – one on foot and the other on a Razor scooter. Fortunately, the victim declined medical attention following the ordeal.
Law enforcement authorities swiftly apprehended both suspects, who are currently facing pending charges. Additionally, two knives were recovered as evidence. These incidents come amidst a concerning trend of escalating felony crimes in the area, with the 20th Precinct reporting a 33 percent increase in overall felony offenses compared to the previous year. The surge is primarily attributed to spikes in grand larcenies, burglaries, and felony assaults, highlighting the need for heightened vigilance and security measures in the community.
The proximity of these crimes to Central Park serves as a stark reminder of the importance of personal safety and awareness, especially in urban environments where incidents of this nature can occur. As residents and visitors alike navigate the bustling streets of the Upper West Side, staying alert and taking precautions can help mitigate the risk of falling victim to similar crimes. The swift response of law enforcement in apprehending the suspects underscores the dedication and efficiency of local authorities in maintaining public safety and upholding justice in the community.
