Cracker Barrel urges staffers to eat at chain for all meals on work trips
Cracker Barrel Implements Cost-Cutting Measures for Work Trips
As part of its efforts to reduce costs amid a sales decline, Cracker Barrel is encouraging employees to dine exclusively at the Southern chain during work trips. This move, which is being referred to as “travelscrimping,” aims to save money by removing the luxury and enjoyment from business travel.
The company has also asked employees to postpone work travel until later in the year when sales are expected to improve. If travel is necessary, employees are instructed to consume all their meals at Cracker Barrel, enjoying Southern favorites like grits, casserole, and biscuits and gravy.
In an internal message obtained by The Wall Street Journal, the company stated that employees are expected to dine at Cracker Barrel for all or the majority of meals while traveling.
While some employees have expressed indifference to the changes, others have noted that they were unaware of the option to drink on work trips, as alcohol was only added to Cracker Barrel’s menus in 2021.
Cracker Barrel clarified that the policy of employees dining at the restaurant during business trips is not new and that employees have the option to eat elsewhere while on the road.
However, the company has restricted reimbursement for alcoholic beverages, requiring employees to pay for them out of pocket unless pre-approved for special occasions.
Other cost-cutting measures include streamlining corporate support and seeking annual savings of $20 million to $25 million. These efforts come after a sales decline attributed to a failed rebranding attempt that faced backlash from customers.

Despite the challenges, Cracker Barrel remains committed to its employees and aims to navigate through the current sales slump while maintaining financial stability.
It’s a balancing act for the company as it strives to cut costs without compromising on the quality of its services and the well-being of its employees.
As the business landscape evolves, companies like Cracker Barrel are faced with tough decisions to adapt and thrive in a competitive market.
Cracker Barrel’s journey to recovery continues as it learns from past mistakes and charts a course for sustainable growth in the future.
