Powerful 7.8 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Mindanao Region in the Philippines
A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 struck the Mindanao region in the southern Philippines early Monday, leading to concerns about a potential tsunami along some coastal areas.
At this time, there is limited information available regarding the extent of damage caused by the earthquake.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located 24.7 kilometers west-southwest of Burias, Philippines, with a depth of 35 kilometers. The tremor occurred at 7:37 a.m., according to data from the U.S. Geological Survey.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued warnings about possible tsunami waves in the Philippines and Malaysia.
The Philippines is known for its susceptibility to natural disasters, including earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, due to its position on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a region with high seismic activity. The country is also frequently battered by typhoons and tropical storms, experiencing around 20 such events annually.
