Peter Cullen, the legendary voice of Optimus Prime, has died at 85. According to his agent, Cullen died Wednesday, August 26, at his home in Los Angeles. His family said he passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones. No official cause of death has been announced, according to TMZ and The Hollywood Reporter.

For generations of fans, Cullen did more than provide a voice: he gave Optimus Prime his moral center. Cullen originated the Autobot leader in the original 1984 Transformers animated series and returned for the live-action film franchise, including Michael Bay’s movies. His work reached across roughly six decades, connecting children who watched the original cartoon with families who later saw the films together.

The character’s strength was deeply personal. Cullen said he based Optimus Prime partly on his older brother Larry, a Marine veteran. His brother’s example helped shape Cullen’s understanding of a true hero: not simply someone powerful, but someone capable of compassion and restraint.
