Norway wins 17th gold medal, breaking record for most won in single Winter Olympics
Record-Breaking Victory for Norway in Biathlon Mass Start Race
ANTERSELVA, Italy — Johannes Dale-Skjevdal of Norway made history in the 15-kilometer mass start race at the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics. He was the only biathlete to hit all 20 of his targets, securing Norway’s 17th gold medal of the games and breaking the record for the most gold medals won by a nation at a single Winter Olympics.
Norway had previously set the record at the 2022 Beijing Olympics with 16 gold medals. Dale-Skjevdal’s flawless shooting performance propelled him to victory in a time of 39 minutes, 17.1 seconds, with his teammate Sturla Holm Laegreid taking silver.
After the race, Dale-Skjevdal expressed his elation at his first perfect shooting performance, saying, “What a day to do it on. It’s real, and I can’t find the words, but it’s just amazing, of course.”
Laegreid, who finished second, described the race as tough but highlighted his fighting spirit, which helped him secure his fifth medal of the Olympics. Germany’s Philipp Horn, who finished fourth, expressed disappointment at not being able to capitalize on his strong shooting performance.
Quentin Fillon Maillet of France claimed the bronze medal after a strong skiing performance despite missing four targets. He emphasized his excitement at winning his ninth Olympic medal, showcasing his resilience and determination.
Despite some challenges faced by other competitors, the race was a display of skill and determination from the top biathletes in the world. Campbell Wright of the United States struggled on the shooting range, while Italy’s Tommaso Giacomel, a top contender, retired from the race due to a sudden medical issue.
The mass start race featured the top 30 biathletes based on World Cup rankings and Olympic performance. The women’s 12.5-kilometer mass start is set to take place on the final day of the Olympic biathlon competition.
Overall, the race showcased the incredible talent and resilience of the biathletes competing at the highest level of the sport. As the Winter Olympics in Milan Cortina draw to a close, the biathlon events have provided fans with thrilling performances and unforgettable moments.
