JPMorgan Chase Abruptly Accuses Customer of Fraud, Rejects Deposit, Terminates Accounts of Family Devastated by 9/11: Report

JPMorgan Chase recently made headlines for accusing a customer of fraud when he attempted to deposit a legitimate annuity check related to his father’s tragic death in the September 11th attacks. Malik Washington, a 28-year-old resident of New York, visited a Chase branch on January 9th to cash the check, which was part of an annuity set up by his mother, Kiesha Washington, for her children after their father passed away on 9/11.

Despite successfully depositing similar checks at the same bank in the past, Washington faced skepticism from bank staff this time around. The check was flagged as fraudulent, although it ultimately cleared the following day. However, Chase chose to withhold the funds, leaving Washington in a state of confusion and frustration.

In his own words, Washington expressed his disbelief, stating, “You’re practically saying that I’m a fraud, that I’m a scam artist… I’d say over ten checks I’ve deposited before, so it shouldn’t have been any problem.” After waiting more than two weeks to receive the payment, he was finally able to pick up the check. Unfortunately, Chase then took the drastic step of closing both his and his mother’s accounts without providing any explanation for their actions.

Following an investigation by a news station, a Chase spokesperson issued a statement, acknowledging the delay in processing the check but failing to address the account closures. The spokesperson stated, “This check was flagged for additional review, and while we apologize for the delay, we are glad Mr. Washington received the funds in full earlier today.”

The incident sheds light on the challenges faced by customers when dealing with financial institutions, particularly in cases where legitimate transactions are called into question. It serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency and clear communication in banking relationships to avoid misunderstandings and unnecessary complications.
